NWT YOUTH BOARD R/V NAHIDIK FOR SCIENCE EXPEDITION

Will Conduct Science, Learn Skills and Shadow Sailors

YELLOWKNIFE: The Arctic Research Foundation (ARF) is inviting media to tour its Research Vessel, Nahidik, and interview the Northern Youth Leadership (NYL) participants and staff prior to their embarkation for a one-week science expedition.

The expedition is possible thanks to a long-term partnership between ARF, NYL, Nature United, and the Government of Northwest Territories.

This partnership could lead to government investment in important northern infrastructure, such as the Taltson Hydroelectric Expansion project. It will also build capacity and create job and training opportunities among local communities, engage local youth, and improve scientific knowledge of Great Slave Lake.

“This is our second year hosting the students, and our ability to carry it out safely during Covid shows the strength of our partnership, which we plan will last for 20 years or more,” said ARF CEO, Adrian Schimnowski. “The value of this north-south knowledge exchange is inestimable, and we’re thrilled to be able to host such an incredible group of students.”

“It's such a unique opportunity for youth to experience first hand living, working, and learning on a research vessel. Many of the youth participants are concerned about the impact of climate change on the lake, and the NWT as a whole,” said Emily Smith, NYL Program Coordinator. “They hope to use this opportunity to deepen their understanding of the lake from a scientific perspective as well as build skills to protect the land and water for their generation, and for the future."

“Three years ago Nature United joined with NYL to create a program that could expand the curiosity of our young leaders and explore this Territory through the lens of Indigenous knowledge, science, and engineering,” said Tracey Williams, NWT Program Lead with Nature United. “We are so pleased to have found a partner with ARF, which is so committed to education and supporting the NWT’s emerging leaders.”
