Photo of the Week

Our photo of the week was taken by Zachary Prong. It shows Mary Avalak at her summer cabin outside of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Mary was born in Wellington Bay, about 200 km west of Cambridge Bay, and lived a nomadic lifestyle with her family hunting and trapping. Life became much more difficult for her family after the RCMP shot their sled dogs, and she eventually settled in Cambridge Bay. “That was very hard. It was very hard for me to live here, but what can you do? I wanted my kids to go to school at the same time, so I had to stay. But then I got used to it later on. This is my home now.”
